explore . create . grow
Acacia Food School is focused on student led learning, we explore and build confidence within the food space, at our students pace. The classes are adjusted to the individual student to allow them a safe and supportive space to explore their creativity and feel empowered within the kitchen.
Our classes are 1 on 1 and while they are food-focused, I place a huge importance on building a strong relationship with the student. Each week we complete a cooking activity based off the weekly theme. Alongside this we also focus on nurturing them by playing some games, going for a little walk, watering the garden or sensory play. These sessions are about the student feeling comfortable and in a safe space to be open to exploring food. Throughout the term, we also explore many tasks and activities such as composting, gardening, shopping at the supermarket, knife skills, food-focused games and the students’ favourite activity… taste testing.
We place an importance on developing fine motor skills, executive functioning & daily living skills whilst exploring textures & flavours.
Whilst our students’ relationship with and confidence around food improves dramatically, I cannot make any promises on expanding our students' range of safe foods, the results vary, student to student, and this is a gentle process. We focus on exposure to new foods, there is no pressure to try, but encouragement to touch, smell, lick and if they're feeling brave, taste.
